Nancy Louise Thome died peacefully in Winchester, Virginia on June 3, 2025, after a long illness. Nancy was born July 23, 1933, to Leon T. Dubey and Yvonne Georgianna Dubey in Berlin, New Hampshire. Berlin was a small New Hampshire paper mill town 60 miles south of the Canadian Border. She is survived by her sister, Jo Morency of La Habra, California and was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, Pitt Thome, sisters Carolyn Urban, Lois O’Leary and brother Leon Dubey.
She was the proud mother of Donna Marie Thome, David Michael Thome, Michael Pitt Thome and Carolyn Patricia Thome; the loving mother -in -law of Charley Boehlert, Tess (Teresa Wingo) Thome, and Paul Rhymer; and was “Gamma” to her delightful eight grandchildren: Isaak Boehlert, Julian Boehlert, Katie Thome, Anna Thome, Grace Thome, Ian Thome, Jack Thome, and Sam Thome.
Nancy was raised in Berlin, New Hampshire and left when she was 18 to attend Becker Junior College in Worcester Massachusetts where she developed lifelong friendships. She graduated in 1953 and began working for an Orthopedic Surgeon (Dr. McGillicuddy) in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1954 she met her husband, Pitt Thome, at a party in Boston and they were married in 1956.
Nancy stayed home for 20 years to raise her four children first in Cincinnati, Ohio, then Wayne, Pennsylvania and finally to Rockville, Maryland where they stayed on St. James Road from 1966-2023. While raising her children, she and Pitt found time to travel on many fun trips with their children to beaches etc. She was quite crafty and sewed many clothes for herself and her children when they were little. She taught Carolyn and Donna to sew when they were a bit older. She was an avid knitter later in life. She gave her children, grandchildren and many charities her beautiful, knitted items. She liked to dress up and would attend Galas in Sparkly Gowns with her husband when he worked for NASA.
Nancy was very sports minded. She was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan that began with many trips to Fenway Park with her Dad while growing up in New Hampshire. In the later 2000s her and Pitt traveled to Boston on a couple different occasions for Red Sox games and stayed in the neighborhood where they met back in the mid-1950s. Nancy was a big Washington Redskins football fan and Nancy and Pitt finally got their Redskins “Season Tickets’ in the later years. Nancy also loved to watch professional golf for decades and their first colored TV was bought so Nancy could watch the 1986 Masters in color. Her favorite color was always green, and her favorite food was Lobster; hence, the above picture of her was chosen.
Once her children were older, she started working at an orthopedic practice as a medical transcriptionist in Rockville, Maryland where she worked for many years and developed special friendships. In their retirement years Nancy and Pitt traveled to many different countries which they enjoyed together.
She and Pitt were devoted members of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Rockville Maryland for over 58 years, where they had many friendships through the years and where their four children attended elementary school and she volunteered in the Parish office.
We will miss our Mom very much. She was always caring and supportive.
