Mona Marlene Dukate, 84 of Stephens City, VA, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, peacefully at her home.
Mona was born in 1940 in Carmichaels, PA, the daughter of Emmett William and Margaret Mae Nicholson. She was a graduate of Carmichaels High School and attended Lord Fairfax Community College, taking online classes working towards her bachelor’s degree. Mona was a LD/EMR teaching aide for Warren County Schools and retired as a bookkeeper for Staunton City Schools.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and was part of a group called the Blanket Brigade which made blankets for newborns in the hospital. Mona was civic-minded and very active in her church. She volunteered a lot in the school systems for her kids and grandkids, and at one point owned her own Kindergarten. Mona loved to play Bingo, cards and enjoyed reading in her younger years.
She married James Edward Dukate on March 20, 1961, in Winchester, VA and he preceded her in death on August 17, 2010.
Mona is survived by her daughters, Lynn Denise Heflin (Daniel) of Stephens City, VA, Lori Deneen Dantzler (Daniel) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Christopher W. Heflin (Ashley) of Williamsburg, VA, Katharyn D. Addington (Josh) of Bunker Hill, WV, Zachary T. Dantzler (Hannah) of Winchester, VA and Joshua A. Dantzler (Molly) of Towson, MD; great-grandchildren, Carson A. Heflin of Williamsburg, VA, Riker C. Heflin of Williamsburg, VA, Emma L. Heflin of Williamsburg, VA, Bryce K. Heflin of Williamsburg, VA, Jeremiah H. Addington of Bunker Hill, WV, Aryanna N. Addington of Bunker Hill, WV and Lilyanna M. Addington of Bunker Hill, WV; sister, Carol K. Maurin (Ed) of Carmichaels, PA and her brothers, Loye Donald Nicholson (Christine) of Kingsville, OH and Paul Wayne Nicholson (Irene) of Geneva, OH.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister, Brenda J. Grooms and brothers, William E. Nicholson and Homer W. Nicholson.
A service will be held for Mona on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 11am at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
