Michael “Mike” Shelton March, 52, of Frederick County, Virginia passed peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday, April 16, 2017. His long battle with cancer is over.
Mike was born in 1964 in Arlington, Virginia, the son of the Frances L. Luttrell and the late John S. March, as well as the stepson of Marjorie L. March and the late John W. Luttrell. He graduated from Chantilly High School, Class of 1982 and attended Northern Virginia Community College and Lord Fairfax Community College. Mike was a Network Technician with Navy Federal Credit Union. He was a member of Hiram Masonic Lodge 21 and was the co-founder, leader and organizer of The Gaggle of Noobs Fundraising Group. Mike started his own non-profit foundation for Bikes for Tykes (Michael S. March Foundation, Inc.). He was an avid reader who had a passion to learn about everything and loved football/Redskins fan. Mike attended New Life Christian Church in Frederick County, Virginia and was a friend to everyone he met.
Mike married Tammy Harshbarger on October 9, 2008 in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his beloved wife, Tammy, are stepdaughters, Carmen Windsor and Christine McPherson both of Pensacola, Florida; stepson, Justin Windsor (Micah) of Xenia, Ohio; step-grandchildren, Brandon Lawwill, Blaike Windsor, and Adasyn Windsor of Xenia, Ohio, Brenton and Amaya Daniel of Stafford, Virginia and Antonio McPherson of Pensacola, Florida; sister, Christine L. Baker (Tony) of Capon Bridge, West Virginia; brother, Larrick S. March (Susan Pierce) of Brucetown, Virginia; stepsisters, Anita Wilson (Timothy) and Robin Malone (Chase) both of Winchester, Virginia and Sheila Corbett (Corey) of Cross Junction, Virginia; stepbrother, William McDermott (Lisa Whiteside) of Gauley Bridge, West Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Sunday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 4:00 PM with Pastor Larry Veach officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions in memory of Mike may be made to Gaggle Empire (his fundraising group), Box 270, 4 Weems Lane, Winchester, Virginia 22601. The contributions will be donated to the Winchester Medical Center Cancer Center and the Michael S. March Foundation, Inc., Bikes for Tykes as well as The Laurel Center of Winchester, Virginia.

Fran, I'm so sorry for your loss. Michael loves you so much, he will remain by your side through your grief to help you remember the good times. Love and prayers, a fellow grieving Mother.

I would often say that I knew Mike for almost three years - when I transferred out to the Winchester campus. He would often remind me that he was not here for a while in the beginning. Honestly, he was so much larger than life, that I really can't remember when he wasn't here. If it was a tough day in the office, it was only a very short matter of time before Mike would come in and have the entire room in stitches. He had a big heart and cared a lot about others - especially the children. He was a great friend and coworker; and will be greatly missed.

I would often say I knew Mike for almost 3 years and he would be quick to remind me that he was out of the office for part of the time when I first transferred to the Winchester. But there was so much laughter and office mayhem that I really can't remember a time when he wasn't here. If I was having a tough day in the office, I knew that once Mike rolled in for his shift, it wouldn't matter because he would have the entire room in stitches within minutes. He was truly someone with a big heart that cared about people - especially the children. The office will never be the same without him and he will be missed.

I was so sorry to hear of the loss of Mike. I didn't get to spend much time with him, but when I was fortunate enough to work out in Winchester alongside Mike, it was always entertaining, to say the least. Mike carried an unusual positive attitude and even a "twisted" sense of humor about his illness, and I had never been around someone with such a positive and casual outlook on life. He knew the disease was taking its toll, yet he never let it get him down, at least not that we could see. I always admired his courage and strength, and I know he will be greatly missed by his Navy Federal family. Mike always said that he regretted that he never got the chance to work for me during his tenure with Navy Federal, but after getting to know Mike, I think I am the one who actually may have missed out. Rest in peace, Mike.

RIP Mike. My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this difficult time

Mike everyday when I saw you I knew that I was either going to laugh or shake my head. Each time I saw you and spoke to you I got to know you more. What I know is that you were passionate about like, you were a vert bright and intelligent man who loved his wife and his country and mankind. The other part I learned was you did not care what others thought. You lived your life to the fullest. You and your Canadian bacon french fry jokes will be missed but remembered. You are a very special person that my life was blessed to have had in my life. In addition meeting Tammy such a strong person she is to have put up with you man! That is love and a blessing. One more thing Mike, leave the Big Guy alone. God doesn't need you coming up with ideas on how to be more efficient in Heaven. He's got this. Thank you for allowing me to call you friend. Love you

My thoughts and prayers go out to Tammy and the rest of the family. Mike could turn a stranger into a friend in a matter of minutes. He could turn a bad day into a good day with a few laughs. What Mike was able to accomplish each year to collect bikes for kids was a testament to the connection he could make with people. You will be missed but never forgotten.

To my wonderful son - You were and still are a good son. At this point you are with God and he has his hands in yours until we meet again. I will miss you terribly..

Dear Fran, Tammy & Family...I know how difficult this time is for you and no preparation takes away the pain and hole left in your hearts. Try to concentrate on the good times with Mike and how fortunate you were to have him as a part of your lives, he's a true *GEM*! ????
