A time of food and fellowship
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness as he would have done (coach a team, volunteer for a charity, fix something for your neighbor) in Scott’s memory, reflecting his lifelong spirit of service
Michael Scott Hollis, known to friends as “Scott” and to family as “Pop,” 86, of North Chesterfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
Born June 12, 1939, in Winchester, Virginia, he was the son of the late John William Hollis, Sr. and Mildred Taylor (Landis) Hollis.
Scott earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Virginia Tech in 1962 and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He dedicated his life to his family and community and was an avid amateur tennis player. His professional career started and ended with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) – nearly four decades. Over the course of his career, he held numerous roles, including Traffic Engineer, Planning Engineer, Assistant Programming and Scheduling Engineer, and ultimately State Urban Engineer, before retiring in 1999.
Scott was an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Public Works Association and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), where he also served as past president of the Virginia Section. He was deeply involved in his community, serving in leadership roles with the Bon Air Exchange Club, Shenandoah Community Association, Richmond Chapter of the Easter Seal Society, Nansemond-Suffolk Exchange Club, Suffolk District Exchange Club, Suffolk District EBA, and the Memorial Society of the Greater Richmond Area. He also volunteered as a youth sports coach for baseball, soccer, and basketball for many years. A generous contributor to his community in every sense, Scott donated approximately 98 pints of blood over his lifetime—more than 12 gallons—helping countless others in need.
Scott was united in marriage for 60 years to Laura Ann (Hedrick) Hollis, on September 11, 1965, at Oakton Unitarian Church in Fairfax County, Virginia.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Hollis; his daughter, Robin Hollis Carper (Brad) of Powder Springs, Georgia; and his three sons, Michael Scott Hollis, Jr. (Ilinka) of Cypress, Texas; William Hedrick Hollis (Jennifer) of Georgetown, Texas; and William Carter White (Lisa) of Warsaw, Virginia.
He was the grandfather of 11 grandchildren: Jennifer, Jessica, and SaraLaura Hollis; Connor and Nathan Carper; Shea and Reid Hollis; Addie and Arion Robison; and Ethan and Reagan White. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nancy Hollis of Wausau, Wisconsin.
In addition to his parents, Scott was preceded in death by his brother, John William Hollis, Jr., and his granddaughter, Jennifer Morgan Hollis.
Scott will be remembered for his lifelong commitment to service, his leadership in both his profession and community, and his deep devotion to his family and local community.
A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Amherst Reception Center at Omps Funeral Home on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at 12:00pm, followed by a graveside service at 2pm at Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages acts of kindness as he would have done (coach a team, volunteer for a charity, fix something for your neighbor) in Scott’s memory, reflecting his lifelong spirit of service.
