Michael Lynn Shepherd, lovingly known as Mike, was born on November 12, 1948, and peacefully entered eternal rest on Feb 20, 2026, under the compassionate care of Martinsburg Veterans Medical Center. He is now whole, healed, and resting in the loving arms of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 35 years, Barbara Shepherd, with whom he built a life full of love, laughter, and shared adventures. He also leaves behind his children: David Huffman (Kris), Michael Shepherd, Dorothy Huffman (Rob), and Kimberly Pare (Marc). He was a proud grandfather to Ryan, Eric, Jennica, Bradley, Blair, Brandon, and Kyle and a great-grandfather to twelve great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Anderson Shepherd, Jr. and Mary Joy Shepherd, and his brother, John Anderson Shepherd, Jr.

Mike proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Food Inspection Specialist. He began his military journey at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was stationed primarily at Fort Meade, Maryland, serving a total of six years—three active duty and three in the reserves—from 1968 to 1974. He was honorably discharged and remained a patriot to his core for the rest of his life. Mike deeply loved his country and made no secret of it, whether through spirited conversation, proudly flying the flag, or supporting organizations dedicated to caring for America’s veterans. In keeping with his lifelong love of country and commitment to those who serve, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made in Mike’s honor to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Above all else, Mike was devoted to his wife, Barbara. Married on May 19, 1991, the two built a life and home filled with love, laughter, and just enough adventure to keep things interesting. They enjoyed road trips to the beach, leisurely Sunday drives always in pursuit of the best fried chicken, and afternoons at car shows—where Mike proudly showed off and won awards for his meticulously restored 1987 Blazer. As the years went by, their adventures may have slowed, but their love never did. Beach trips became fewer, yet somehow more special, and home became their favorite place. There, Mike could often be found watching NASCAR or football, or keeping an amused eye on the neighborhood cats through the home security cameras—a hobby that provided him endless entertainment. Through every season, Barbara remained faithfully by his side, lovingly caring for him with the same devotion and grace that defined their marriage.

Mike’s life was one of loyalty, love, service, and faith. He lived imperfectly but sincerely, and he trusted deeply in God’s grace. As Scripture reminds us, “Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:23)

He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and joyfully reunited with loved ones in eternity.
