Michael Joseph, “Mike” “Sir” Vergot, 80, of Winchester, VA passed away January 26, 2023 at the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Center.
Mike was born November 21, 1942 in York, PA, the son of late John Joseph and Elizabeth Alberta Reigel Vergot. As a child, he attended St. Ambrose Elementary School and even remained in touch with his classmates as recently as a 60 year reunion in 2017. DeMatha High School was where Mike spread his wings. He began traversing the hills and streets of his hometown of Cheverly , MD, being well known for ALWAYS having a party in his trunk!
Mike met Jacki at a bar on her 21st birthday and the rest is history! Mike married Jaclyn “Jacki” Voegler on October 5, 1963 and a love story for the ages began.
Jacki preceded Mike in death on May 5, 2020.
Mike earned many certifications in the industry of printing which jettisoned his career forward. The majority was spent at S&S Graphics in Rockville,MD where he taught and trained multiple staff and aided the creation of a multi-million dollar company. His “second” career was his dream job at the Home Depot. Mike managed the plumbing and kitchen departments all while providing customer service to all who needed that Mr. Fixit in their life!
Upon his retirement and move to Winchester Virginia, he enjoyed golfing, gardening, cruising with Jacki, and teaching the next generation all about grilling the perfect steak and the best ribs ever. A weekly treat was sharing some popcorn with whichever dog was lucky enough to be there while watching the birds and squirrels take advantage of an occasional leftover peanut butter jar.
A lover of all things liquor related, Mike showed no specific preference and enjoyed a lifelong appreciation for Bourbon, Scotch, Vodka, Gin and most recently 5 Tequilas. Mike also was quite proud of “fostering” a plethora of young people that needed a house that was safe and he was the father figure and mentor most were in need of. A “worker” by birth right, Mike’s primary focus was providing for Jacki, Rick, Shannon and anyone lucky enough to be in his universe. His unwavering steadfastness, would soon be showered on his grandchildren and then great grandchildren. This past year, Mike counted himself fortunate enough to be a part of the Winchester, Seniors First , Senior Center where he shared hours of fun, silliness, happiness and friendship.
Sir was a gentle, handsome, kind and funny man who towered over most with his 6’2″ frame and also cried when his “kids” made him feel loved back.
Michael is survived by his daughter Shannon Vergot Phillips (John); his son Richard G. Vergot (Carla); grandchildren Madeline Goubeaux-Nelsen (Michael) and Zachary F. Goubeaux; great grandchildren Maeve Primrose Nelsen and Malcolm Henry Nelsen; his sister Joan Vergot Holliday Yates; his brother John Vergot( Lois) and also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.
The names of people Mike called friends are too generous to list but never forgotten.
In addition to his parents and wife Jacki, Mike was also preceded in death by his two older sisters Elaine Resnick and Patricia Phillips; and his three brother-in-law’s A.D. Yates, David Resnick and Tom Phillips.
Relatives and friends are invited to his visitation Wednesday, February 1, 2023 from 2:30 pm until his Funeral Service at 3:30pm at the Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be Thursday at 11AM at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Rd., Fairfax, VA 22032.
