Michael Joseph Berry, 28, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Friday, September 15, 2023.

Michael was born in 1994 in Watersmeet, MI, the son of Wayne Jefferson Berry, II and Beth Reese Berry. He graduated from Laurel Ridge Community College with his Associate’s Degree. Michael served our country in the United States Air Force earning the rank of E-5 Staff Sergeant. While in the Air Force he attended many Air Force Schools and was an Air Force Combat Flight Medic. Michael loved hiking and nature and was also an animal lover. He was very artistic and enjoyed drawing, writing and reading. Michael also loved staying fit and healthy, he was very spiritual and had a very kind and gentle nature. Michael held his family very near and dear to his heart.

He is survived by his parents, sisters, Juniper S. Foy (D. Sao), Erin Kathleen Engle (Geremey), Sarah Christine Berry, Amanda Grace Berry Hess (Justin), Jennie Reese Berry, Samantha Elisabeth Berry and Siobhan Noël Berry; brothers, Wayne Jefferson Berry, III (Whitney), David Andrew Berry, Mark Patrick Berry, Ian Christopher Berry and Benjamin Liam Berry, along with many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Maternal grandparents, Alice Reese and the late Thomas Reese, paternal grandparents, Arthur Wayne Berry and the late Jeanne Berry

A memorial service for Michael will be held on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 2pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

I will miss you my friend. I will miss sending you pictures of the kitties. It was so sweet that you were worried about Bob when he was sick. You were definitely one of a kind.

I served with Michael in the 167 th WV Air National Guard. He is one of the first people I saw when I joined the clinic there. He was always very kind, helpful and an all-around good soul. Anytime I think of the 167th Medical Group his face and presence automatically come to mind. He is missed very much by all his friends and colleagues on base. Please accept my condolences for your family’s loss.

Michael was always a kind and pleasant person in the eight weeks and change that I spent with him in Basic Military Training (BMT). If I remember correctly, he was our guidon bearer for marching to and from places and always did a fine job of such. We did not end up having the same job or duty station, but fortunately in the internet age staying in touch was easy. I will remember him for being a caring soul who shared such love for his family and nature.

Loving you all from afar. My heart is with you. So so sorry for your loss.

I worked with Michael out at the 167th. One of my first real interactions with SSgt Berry I had that impacted me was after a Covid mission driving back on base I unloaded the GOV & left some luggage outside of the van. I had to run inside the clinic to go do administrative stuff. It started to rain & I had no idea but Michael was paying attention. He moved my luggage under a pavilion so it wouldn’t get rained on. He was a great wingman & looked out for others, considering their needs above his. He showed me in that moment service before self. He always had a wonderful smile & would help you do anything you needed or ask for help with! In August, I remember our conversation at drill so clearly. I ask him if he would be willing to take my blood pressure for an occupational health screen & of course he said yes. We started talking & I ask him what his plans were after getting out of the guard. He mentioned everyone moving to Tennessee & he was considering it. He also talked about family. His sweet niece Ember & how I’d have to meet her once Erin moves back after med school to be one of our docs at the clinic. He told me about Sarah & how she moved to Baltimore close to where I’m at in Ellicott city. You could tell he loved & breathed Family. I told him then he was a great medic & we would miss him. Hearing of his passing is absolutely heartbreaking & I am truly sorry. I will always remember SSgt Michael Berry & think fondly of memories in the clinic talking with him. It was a privilege to serve together. I will be praying for your family in this time. Capt Staubs
