Michael H. Dunn
Michael Hathoway Dunn, 65, of Middletown, Virginia, died Sunday, January 6, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Dunn was born in 1947 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late John Henry Dunn, Jr. and Gwendolyne A. Dunn. He was a graduate of James Wood High School (JWHS), Class of 66, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged.
During his high school years Mike was involved in many school clubs and organizations to include varsity wrestling and won many wrestling titles for JWHS, Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H Club, Vocational Agricultural Club as Class Chairman. The many skills he learned in his early years helped him achieve many accomplishments throughout life. After graduating from high school one of Mike’s first jobs was a heavy equipment operator tasked with building Interstate 81.
He was a retired agent from Nationwide Insurance and over the years helped hundreds of clients with their insurance needs. Those who remember Mike from his early business years, will recall the large Nationwide Insurance sign on Rt. 50. Mike was also a licensed Real Estate Broker. Mr. Dunn was a car enthusiast, loved to roller-skate, enjoyed to travel internationally and especially to Ocean City, MD.
Mr. Dunn attended the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
Surviving are his siblings, Virginia “Vicky” West and husband, Raymond, of Middletown, VA,
Elizabeth “Libby” Novak and husband Steve, of Annandale, VA, Kimberly “Kim” Kibler, of Gastonia, NC, Mary Dunn Casilear and husband, George , of Winchester, VA, John “Jay Jay” Dunn III and wife Diane, of Haymarket, VA, Dr. David Dunn and wife Aissata, of Ashburn, VA, and Kathryn “Kathy” Baity, of Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael “Mikey” Dunn and his brother Robert E. Dunn.
He is survived by nieces Patty Casey, Laura Zak, Cassie Harding, Meggin Thomilson, Melanie Smith, Emily Novak and Amy Atwell, and nephews Kolby Slaughter, Christopher Slaughter, David Dunn Jr., Adrian Dunn, Ian Dunn, Jacob Dunn, Joshua Dunn, and Steven Novak.
He is also survived by Alistar and Patricia Birtwistle, of Cheltenham, England, Paul and Mandy Ducksbury of Tewkesbury, England, Ian and Dr. Lucy Birtwistle, of Australia, Steven and Mindy Wrightson, of Easton, MD, Elainie Wrightson, of Easton, MD, Sally and Lee VanMeter, of Lewes, DE, Patsy and Leroy Hill, of Wilmington, NC, and George and Pam Dunn, of Richmond, VA.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2012, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 19, 2013, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Roy Sampson, Steve Novak, John Dunn, III, David Dunn, Jr., Kolby Slaughter, and Christopher Slaughter. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. David Dunn, George Casilear, Steven Novak, Chris Thomilson, Adrian Dunn, Ian Dunn, Jacob Dunn and Joshua Dunn.
