Michael D. Greene, 40, beloved Winchester native, died early Wednesday morning, April 18, 2007 after a two-year journey through colon cancer.
Mike was born July 17, 1966 in Tacoma, Washington. His family soon moved back to the Winchester area where Mike spent his youth and graduated from James Wood High School, “The Class of ‘84”. At an early age, Mike showed an entrepreneurial spirit and after several formative years working under his first mentor at our local Chick-Fil-A, he earned a scholarship to Berry College in Rome, GA. He graduated from Berry in 1988 with his Bachelor’s degree in Business.
Mike’s work ethic, integrity and incredible ability to connect with people steadily built his career until finally in 1999, he became a partner with close friends in Axiom Staffing Group and was proud to have successfully expanded the business to 5 locations in surrounding areas.
Mike’s love of people permeated his entire life. He could have had no greater love for his family and he lived for his tight network of good friends. But above all no one meant more to him than the love of his life, Cheryl. In fact, he loved her so much he married her twice.
Mike’s legacy lives on in those he touched with his extraordinarily positive attitude, undying determination and quick sense of humor. These qualities carried him and his family through his journey with illness, repeatedly beating the statistics and remained strong in him during his final days.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Cheryl; his two adored sons, Cal, 12 and Jack, 9; parents Bonnie and David Greene of Winchester; his brother Dan and his wife Lori, of Fayetteville, GA and their two children, Dylan and Neil; and Mike’s sister Betsy and her fiancé Matt Schaefer, of Christchurch, VA. Mike is also survived by his grandmother Margaret Greene and step-grandmother Iona Combs both of Stephens City.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, April 21, 2007 at 2:00 PM at Braddock Street United Methodist Church, 115 Wolfe Street, Winchester, VA 22601 with Rev. Dr. Susan Garrett officiating. A celebration of life will immediately follow at the Old Town Event Center, 403 South Loudoun Street, Winchester, VA 22601 where friends and family will be received.
Memorial donations may be made to the Abilities Network – Epilepsy Foundation of the Chesapeake Region, 8503 LaSalle Road, Towson, MD 21286-5915. www.abilitiesnetwork.org
