Michael Bryant Head, 78, of Winchester, VA, passed away Thursday, September 26, 2024. He was a good man, kind, generous and honest. A native of Memphis, TN, Mike had lived in Winchester for 24 years and for the past eleven weeks had resided at Westminster Canterbury Shenandoah Valley. He was the son of the late Julia Bryant Head and Gustave A. Head. He married Nelda Dunlap, on August 26, 1967, in Memphis. They had met in Sunday School when they were six years old and later got married in the same church.
Mr. Head graduated Magna Cum Laude with Honors from Yale University where he was a Ranking Scholar all four years. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi. Mike received a post-graduate degree from Princeton University. He was president and served on the Board of Directors of Schonstedt Instrument Co, Kearneysville, WV, from 1998 until his retirement in 2011. During his tenure he presided over an ESOP conversion and instituted a Humanitarian Demining Initiative. That program donated magnetic locator instruments to the United Nations for distribution throughout the world to find unexploded ordnance, which could then be safely destroyed thereby improving the lives of millions of people. Mr. Head’s prior career was centered in Chicago, IL, where he was president of an electronics firm and executive vice president of two other companies. He held patents on two electronic devices, a power entry module and capacitor packaging.
In high school Mike was president of the student body and valedictorian of his class. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, since 2006. Hobbies he enjoyed over the years included biking, sailing, water skiing, hiking, making things in his workshop, reading mysteries and celebrating nature. He volunteered as Cubmaster for a Pack, delivered food to the needy, presided over the Board of a non-profit child development center and was webmaster for a photography club. Animals were invariably drawn to him.
In addition to his wife of 57 years, Mr. Head is survived by two sons, Michael Lawdon of CO and Jonah Bryant Head of OR. Along with his parents, he is predeceased by his son, Kyle and sister Susan H. McNinch.
The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, 1600 Amherst St, Winchester on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Winchester on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 1pm. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Mike’s ashes will be dispersed privately by his family.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Mr. Head supported Children’s Christian Fund for over 50 years.
O Lord, grant eternal rest unto Michael and let everlasting light shine upon him. May his soul Rest in Peace with the souls of all the faithful witnesses departed, through the mercy of God. Amen
