Matthew John “Matt” Borkowski, 69, of Cross Junction, Virginia, passed away on Monday, August 17, 2026, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Matt was born on September 3, 1956, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of the late Anthony Borkowski and Margaret (Kebisek) Borkowski. He was a graduate of Everett High School and spent his career working for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission in state government, as well as part-time at AutoZone in Stephens City, prior to his retirement.

On June 21, 1975, Matt married the love of his life, Nancy Jane (Dibert) Borkowski, in Windber, Pennsylvania. Together, they built a life centered around love, faith, and family. Matt was a faithful member of the Winchester Church of God where he served in various roles within the church supporting the youth and helping others through the churches’ food pantry. He also held memberships with the American Legion, Yellow Creek Coalition, and Trout Unlimited.

An avid fly fisherman and true outdoorsman, Matt found immense peace and happiness in nature. Whether casting a fly line, enjoying quiet water, or simply spending time driving through the mountains in the open air, his passion for the outdoors was constant throughout his life. Matt “The Hat” was an avid Penn State football fan who loved cheering on the Nittany Lions and followed every game with unmatched enthusiasm. His passion and sometimes frustration could get a little intense on gamedays, creating plenty of memorable moments and stories that his family and friends will always cherish. Above all, Matt devoted himself to his family. His deep love and compassion for his wife, children, and grandchildren were the foundation of everything he did, and his greatest joy came from the time they shared together.

Surviving with his beloved wife of 51 years, Nancy, are his daughter, Jessica Gerald (Chad) of Winchester, VA; his sons, Shannon Borkowski (Angela) of Berryville, AR, and Andy Borkowski (Nicole) of Strasburg, VA; and his cherished grandchildren, Julia Borkowski (Trenton), Zander Borkowski, Sophia Gerald, Braxton Borkowski, and Charlotte Gerald.

In addition to his parents, Matt was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Borkowski.

A visitation will be held for Matt on Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 10am with a service to follow at 11am all held at Winchester Church of God.

We got to know Matt and Nancy through my brother Chuck Kelly. Chuck and Matt were bonded together through their love of fly fishing. They both loved the outdoors so much and went fishing many, many times together all over the East Coast. Fred and I received the benefits of that friendship as we also got to know both Nancy and Matt as friends and it was a pleasure to be around both of them. My brother Chuck passed away on March 16 of this year and Nancy and Matt (who was dealing with his own health issues) drove up from the Winchester area to Boswell, PA, for Chuck's viewing. Also, in the past, when my brother was in the hospital, here in Johnstown, PA, they would drive up and visit. Truly, could you ask for better friends. I think that shows their personalities and compassion. If there is fly fishing in Heaven, I know both of them will be standing side by side on a river bank somewhere. Prayers to Nancy and family. I am so sorry for your family's loss. My love and passion for fly fishing and fly tying are due in large part to Matt's guidance and friendship. The streams he introduced me to as a teenager will forever be etched in my memory. I often think about our trip to Slate Run, Pennsylvania, flying down the mountain in what I believe was a brown Renault. I was terrified we would hit a deer in the middle of nowhere. Then there was our trip to the Rapidan River in Virginia, where that same car seemed to bottom out over every bump on the road in and out of Camp Hoover. Matt always had time for my endless questions. He was generous with his knowledge and encouragement, offering advice that helped me improve my fly tying skills when I was just getting started. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. I will keep Matt and all of you in my thoughts and prayers. Ed
