Mathew was born on March 10, 1984, in Stafford, Virginia and went to his final home on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. He was raised in Manassas and Woodbridge, VA until the family moved to Front Royal, VA in his senior year of high school. He was disappointed he had to leave Stonewall Jackson High School to complete his final year at Warren County High School; he was so well loved at Stonewall Jackson, he was invited to cross the stage there, graduating from and receiving his diploma there.

Mat showed love and respect to everyone he met. People who knew him well, know that he was a fighter. He was born with cerebral palsy and was not expected to live past the age of 10, but that didn’t stop from living an everyday typical life. (He fooled those doctors, didn’t he?)

Mathew was highly intelligent as well as exceedingly determined and independent. Although he was born with cerebral palsy, he did not allow that to stop him from accomplishing all that he wished to do. He was intent on earning enough money to get out of an apartment and rent a house and accomplished this goal in the last years of his life.

Mat’s favorite things to do were playing video games and watching the Redskins play during football season (although he would become irritated when they didn’t play well).

With the love and support of a big family and true friends, Mathew became a modern-day SuperMan, much stronger than anybody we’ve known.

Mat was all smiles each day we went to his home for support services. His infectious smile was a warm welcome as we walked in, singing, joking, and dancing even when there was no music in the background. Mat became our brother who embraced the whole staff with love. Mat liked to learn new things about other cultures. His staff were always happy to share those conversations with him. That became the basis of the staff's relationships with Mat. We looked forward to seeing him each day. There was never a dull, never a sad day, never a meaningless day, never a down day, but always a full of joy, love, compassion, laugher, singing, listening to music, playing video games, cooking, dancing, talking about trips he wants to take in the future, going to the beach, a cruise, and to Hawaii. We know you are having a wonderful time in heaven, friend, rest till we meet again.

I first met Matt 12 years ago at Nw works. He was helping me make boxes for the milk, and before I knew we started talking, mostly about random stuff, but he was good company all the same. I saw him again in recent years working at Walmart, and once again we started talking even for a few minutes...last time I saw him was a few days before he passed away....If I had known that would have been the last time I saw him I would have stopped to say hi and talk to him for a bit... He was a true friend and an amazing individual

Mat, was my friend/coworker. I am completely saddened and shocked about his death. He was a good friend that I go to.. he will be missed.. i am sorry for his friends and family loss. I will be praying for everyone., it’s a process of grief. He would want us to be happy..

So many memories with this man. In the past year he grew to be a big part of my family. I could on for days on the countless number of memories I have with him. He will truly be missed. A big part of my heart went to heaven. I hope your up there living your best life. I will forever love you bubba!

I was so sad when I went to Walmart and saw Mat’s memorial. I loved seeing Mat on my many visits to Walmart. I always stopped to say hi to him. One day I even helped him open his lunch. I will truly miss Mat. Sending prayers to the family. ❤️🙏
