Mary Louise McWhorter Zickefoose, known as Mary Lou and MZ, passed away on March 14, 2025, at the Winchester Medical Center in Winchester, Virginia, at the age of 100. She was born in Lewis County, West Virginia, to Carlton and Goldie McWhorter. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her brother, Bruce McWhorter, and her sister, Lois Ann Cailliet.
A proud graduate of Weston High School, Class of 1941, she furthered her education at West Virginia Wesleyan College, graduating in 1945. In 1948, she married Mendle Zickefoose, who predeceased her in 1997. Together, they welcomed a daughter, Suzanne, who passed away in 2011.
Mary Lou dedicated thirteen years to teaching mathematics at Buckhannon Upshur High School in Buckhannon, West Virginia. After relocating to Winchester, Virginia, she continued her passion for education by teaching math courses at Shenandoah College for 20 years.
A devoted member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church, Mary Lou was also active in the American Association of University Women, the Philanthropic Education Organization Sisterhood (PEO), where she served as past state president, the Rock Harbor Ladies Golf League, and various bridge clubs.
She is survived by four grandsons: Aaron (Shannon) Garber, Justin (Ashley) Garber, Brandon (Lindsey) Wakeman, and Tyler (Angel) Wakeman; five great-grandchildren: Bella and Mayzie Thomas-Garber, Olive and Rhodes Wakeman, and Knox Wakeman; and her son-in-law, Rex (Kim) Wakeman.
A public viewing will be held on Thursday, March 27, at Omps Funeral Home on Amherst Street in Winchester, Virginia, from 6 to 8 PM. The funeral service will take place on Friday, March 28, at Braddock Street United Methodist Church in Winchester at 11 AM, with a reception to follow at the church after the burial.
