Mary Hunter Miller Froehlich, 76 of Stephens City, VA died on Sunday, August 21, 2022 at Heritage Hall in Front Royal, VA.

Mary was born on August 2, 1946 in Winchester, the daughter of the late Paul Hunter and Peggy Ritter Miller. She was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 1964; Madison College, Class of 1968; and JMU, Class of 1977. She was a life-long member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester, serving as the volunteer archivist. Mary was employed for over 30 years as a library media specialist at Frederick County Middle School. In retirement, Mary worked at the reference desk at the Bowman branch of The Handley Regional Library. She was a member of several book groups and held leadership positions with the American Association of University Women for over 50 years.

Mary married Eugene Edward (Ed) Froehlich in 1968 in Winchester. Surviving with her husband is a daughter, Rebecca Hunter Froehlich Headings and a grandson, Hunter Robert Headings of Virginia Beach, sister, Martha Miller Prusch (Bill), of Winchester, and brother, Thomas Miller (Bonnie) of Asheville, NC, and their families. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and her son-in-law, Gary Robert Headings.

A visitation will be held Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 10am with a Celebration of Life service at 11:00am at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Winchester, VA.

Officiating will be Pastor Martha Sims. lnurnment will be private in the Memorial Garden of Mount Hebron Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 26 W. Boscawen Street, Winchester, VA.

Although I have not been in the Winchester area for several years, when I lived there i shared many interests with Mary. We were fellow students on a journey toward a Masters from JMU, compatriots in the career of public school media specialist, and enjoyed "second careers" at Bowman library. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends. I was a student library aid for three years and so enjoyed working with her. She was a very loving, kind and helpful lady. A true blessing to FCPS!

I am so sorry to read of Mary's death! We graduated together from James Wood High School in 1964, having shared many classes and happy memories throughout our high school years. We were facebook friends and would see each other at class reunions and library functions over the years. Mary never changed -- whether I'd seen her a month ago or years ago, she was always the same. I will miss you, Mary.

Mary was my mentor first and then my dear friend. She taught be everything I know about being a librarian when I first joined her at Frederick County Middle School in 1978. She was amazing! I never knew a time when a student asked about a book that she couldn’t give a little book talk, because she had read it! She read everything and loved doing it. Mary may be gone from this earth, but she will live on in the countless people whose lives she touched. I still can’t believe she’s gone, and I miss her so much. I know that her Heaven is filled with books.

Mary was my librarian at Frederick County Middle School. I have wonderful memories of participating on her Battle of the Books team. As an adult, I continued to see her at the Bowman Library when I would bring my daughters to get books. I’m so sorry for the family’s loss. I will be keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers as you celebrate her life and the positive influence she had on so many.

We will surely miss you with all my heart. One day we will talk again and have a big reunion! Love you my dear cousin?

Mary was quite a woman. In her unassuming way she stood up and spoke out for the rights of women. She was a strong advocate for the ERA. Mary was a advocate for literacy and served on the board of Literacy Volunteers for a number of years. It was in the LVWA that I came to know Mary. She and I worked closely together to save the organization from its dissolvement. I will always remember the stories,events and activities we shared. Mary was a good woman and I will miss her presence in this physical world. Peace be with her family. I loved Mary and her unmistakable joy in preservation.

Mary loved her career and helped many people including students and teachers as well as members of the community in her roll at the reference desk at Bowman Library. She will be remembered by many.

Saddened to hear of your passing. We were just classmates I always enjoyed catching up as friends on Facebook . R.I.P.

Mary was a dear friend and tireless advocate for literacy, libraries, and women's and family issues. She will be so missed. Ed, Rebecca, Hunter, and Martha, please know that you all are in my prayers. Deepest condolences.

I’m so sorry to hear this. I spent a lot of time with Mary in the FCMS library. We always had a good time. I know she will be missed.

The world has lost a remarkable person in Mary Froehlich. She was a faithful daughter, wife, teacher, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Mary will be greatly missed. We have been blessed by her presence on this earth and in our lives.
