Mary Frances Critikos Elgin, 74, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Monday,
January 8, 2024, at her home.
Fran was born in 1949 in Gary, WV, the daughter of the late Bill and Theresa
Critikos. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from Bluefield State College
and went on to earn her master’s degree in social work from Virginia
Commonwealth University (VCU). Fran worked as a social worker for the
Department of Social Services in Martinsville, VA and retired as Court Services
Unit Director, Department of Juvenile Justice, Twenty-Second District Court
Service Unit. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Martinsville. Fran
enjoyed taking trips and reading.
She married Douglas Lloyd Elgin on January 5, 1974, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
He preceded her in death on February 19, 2022.
Fran is survived by her daughter, Theresa E. Elgin of Lebanon, TN; son, Chris D.
Elgin (Meranda) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Brayden Elgin of Winchester,
VA, Skye Bonhams of Winchester, VA, Haleigh Rigney of Winchester, VA; great-
grandchild, Saint Morelli of Winchester, VA; sisters, Patricia Vogt of Baltimore,
MD, Gladys Cline of Harrisonburg, VA; brother-in-law Wayne Elgin of Bassett, VA;
nieces, Christy Luis of Towson, MD, Susan Beth Accord of Beckley, WV; nephews,
Jimmy Marzi of Baltimore, MD, Billy Marzi of Mechanicsville, MD, Johnny Vogt of
BelAir, MD, Tony Cline of Staunton, VA, Dustin Elgin of Bassett, VA and Andrew
Elgin of Bassett, VA.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters, Anna Critikos, Trula
Scruggs, and her brother Jimmy Critikos.
A memorial service will be held for Fran on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Omps
Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fran’s name may be made to
Alzheimer's/Dementia Organizations or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundations.
