Mary Edwina (Moss) Apostle, 92, of Winchester, Virginia, departed this life peacefully and surrounded by family on Sunday, December 3, 2023.
Edwina was born in Arlington County, Virginia, the second child of the late Edwin P. Moss, Jr. and Mary Virginia (Kidd) Moss. She graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Arlington and received her BA at Mary Washington College before getting her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Virginia. She taught in public schools for two years and then spent nine years at the Children’s Rehabilitation Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. Edwina served as President of the Virginia Education Association in Special Education.
While pursuing her Ph.D at the University of Virginia, Edwina met and married Tom on October 19, 1962, at the Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. After marrying, she stayed home to raise their family. In their 56 years of marriage, Edwina and Tom enjoyed tennis and golf, gourmet cooking, and traveling the world together.
She was an active community volunteer. For many years, Edwina worked with the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary and took part in their annual Follies Show. She was a member of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church and was well-known for her prized baklava at the annual Greek pastry sale.
Edwina was a talented pianist and a gifted artist. Her original medium was oils, but she came to learn watercolors later in life and enjoyed painting birds, especially. She also loved gardening, reading, playing Mahjong with friends, and was an active Garden Club member. She was a gracious hostess and always smiling. Her laugh was infectious. She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.
She is predeceased by her husband, Tom Apostle (2018), her niece Suzanne Swartz (2020), and her sister, Bernice Weis (2000). She is survived by her three children; Christopher (Derek), Beth (Bert), and Andrew (Tiffany), six grandchildren; Adrianna, Sara Parker, Colleen, James, Richard, and Aidan, cousin Harl Jeffrey, and niece Terry Langford (Gary). Her family was her greatest joy. She modeled for them what family was all about – love, commitment, and doing for others.
The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Wednesday, December 27 from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with Trisagion services at 6:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 28 at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst Street, Winchester, Virginia, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Milan Sturgis officiating. A buffet luncheon will follow at the reception hall at Omps Funeral Home. Interment will be private.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to SVWC Fellowship Fund, 300 Westminster-Canterbury Drive, Winchester, Virginia 22603 or Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 1700 Amherst Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
