Mary E. Cawood Burkett
Mary Elizabeth Burkett, 102, of Winchester, Virginia, died, Tuesday, May 22, 2012, in a local nursing facility.
Mrs. Burkett was born in 1909, in Crawford County, Illinois, the daughter of Ira W. and Dollie Cawood. She was a homemaker and worked for Flat Rock Journal Newspaper in Flat Rock, Illinois. Mrs. Burkett was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, where she was active in the women’s work of the church and taught Sunday School. Mary enjoyed reading, playing bridge, entertaining friends and family and was a prolific writer. Besides corresponding with family and friends she authored a memoir of the family adventures of restoring the Burkett-Stillwell farm (High Banks) in Stephenson, Virginia.
Her husband, Lowell A. Burkett, whom she married on April 16, 1938, in Robinson, Illinois, preceded her in death on May 27, 2011.
Surviving is her daughter, Rebecca Stillwell and husband, James D., of Stephenson, Virginia, son, Andrew C. Burkett of Manassas, Virginia; 7 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
One daughter Cynthia Bowlin; four brothers, Duward Oral Caywood, Clarence Donovan Cawood, Nelson Brooks Caywood and Paul Graydon Caywood, preceded her in death.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, in Mount Hebron Cemetery, with Pastor Rob Lovett officiating.
