Mrs. Van Sickler was born in 1928 in Warren, Maryland, the daughter of the late Benjamin and Edna Lovel. She graduated from Eastern High School in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Van Sickler was a typist for the Government Printing Office, as well as a homemaker, raising four children. She was an avid quilter and a member of several quilting clubs and a member of various homemaker clubs. Mrs. Van Sickler enjoyed singing and loved to bake, especially her squash muffins. Her greatest passion was her family; she enjoyed spending time and taking care of her grandchildren. A loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother that will be missed.
Her husband, Robert Gerald “Jerry” Van Sickler, Sr., whom she married on April 16, 1948 in Washington, D.C. preceded her in death in 2004.
Surviving is a daughter, Alison M. Van Sickler; sons, Gary D. Van Sickler (Birgit), Robert G. “Jerry” Van Sickler, Jr. (Connie), and Dr. Joel T. Van Sickler (Kate); grandchildren, Dr. Caitlin M. Schultheis (Matthew), Michael J. Van Sickler (Caroline), Dr. Andrew P. Van Sickler (Dr. Christina Van Sickler), Jordan T. Van Sickler, Gregory R. Van Sickler, Kelsey C. Van Sickler, and Kristyna A. Van Sickler; great grandchildren, Rose Marie and Abigail Grace Schultheis; and many loving nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Along with her husband Mrs. Van Sickler was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Cecilia Shaver and a brother, Richard B. Lovel.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 12 pm to 1 pm on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 1 pm. Interment will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Frederick County, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Mary may be made to Adult Care Center, 411 North Cameron Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
