Surrounded by family at home, Mary Ann Rexrode, of Winchester, VA passed from her family’s arms into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
During her 87 years of life, Mary shared many happy times with family and friends.
She enjoyed 37 years of marriage with the love of her life, the late Robert Russell Rexrode. Together they raised two sons, Robert Randall, and Richard Ryan. She was the proud grandmother of Richard and his wife Tessa’s daughters, Anne Rexrode Eckert and Laura Rexrode Martin, and their husbands, Brock Eckert, and Josiah Martin. She was also the proud great-grandmother of 4 great-grandchildren.
She also enjoyed life with her forever family at the Church of Christ at Mountain View and Galilee Christian Church. Many knew her as an encourager, example, and inspiration.
Mary was also known by former students, parents, and colleagues as a dedicated first-grade teacher. During her retirement from Frederick County Public Schools after 33 years of teaching, her influence and relationships continued. She regularly celebrated birthdays, game nights, and outings with a group of fellow teachers who fondly referred to themselves as “the girls.”
In nice weather, Mary could be found sitting outside on her patio couch, working on cross-word puzzles, reading her Bible, and watching the birds and squirrels raid her bird feeders.
Mary also knew difficult times with the passing of her parents, Paul, and Olga Vargo, her life-long love, Robert Russell, first-born son, Robert Randall, brother, Joe Vargo, her only sister, Dorothy Vargo, and many friends. Through difficult and disappointing times, she held onto to her faith in Jesus.
She will be greatly missed by her son Richard and his family, her brother Gerald Vargo, and her friends and extended family. Mary is at home with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It was her greatest desire that all would hear and believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ, repent, confess, and be baptized for the forgiveness of their sins and live in continuing trust and confidence in the promises of God for this life and the life to come. She was confident in the grace and love of Jesus Christ. As the affirmations of love from her family faded, she heard the commendation and welcome of Jesus, “well done good and faithful servant; enter into the joy of your Lord.”
A celebration of Mary’s life led by Robert Hart will be held on Saturday, May 23 at 11:00 AM, at Galilee Christian Church at 1831 Welltown Pike, Clearbrook, VA 22624. Family and friend’s visitation begins at 10:00 AM and a meal will follow the service.
An committal service led by Doug Hardman will be held on Tuesday, May 26 at 10:00 AM at Shenandoah Memorial Park’s mausoleum chapel on Route 522.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Children’s and Youth Ministry at the Church of Christ at Mountain View.
