Martha “Ellen” E. Aikens, 101, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 25, 2026.
Born on December 29, 1924, in Virginia, Ellen lived a long and full life marked by devotion to her family, strong work ethic, and a caring heart for others.
Ellen worked as a forklift operator at Byrd Orchard in Berryville, Virginia, and also spent time working in a sewing factory. Most importantly, she was a devoted homemaker and foster mother, opening her home and heart to many children over the years. She also worked at the Bonds Motel in Winchester.
Ellen loved sewing, crocheting, gardening, baking, and fishing. She took great pride in her home and enjoyed keeping it neat and welcoming. Her nurturing spirit and dedication to caring for others were evident in everything she did.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, Herman “Bill” Lee Aikens, who passed away on April 13, 2011, as well as one sister and five brothers.
She is survived by her daughters, Virginia Joyce Williams (the late Dennis) and Chonta Renee Stickel (Bruce); her grandchildren, Darren Wayne Williams (Lora), Dakota Scott Stickel (Anna), and Ciera Nicole Stickel (Cassie); her great-grandchildren, Autumn Dawn Williams, Austin Blake Williams, and Willem Wieber; and her great-great-grandchildren, Kolden Steel Williams and Emeric Cade Williams.
Ellen will be remembered for her kindness, her dedication to family, and the many lives she touched through her role as a foster mother. Her legacy of love and care will continue through the generations of her family.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 6:00 p.m. Interment will be Monday, May 4, 2026 at 12pm in Shenandoah Memorial Park. Officiating will be Pastor Terry Keaton.
