Marilyn Carol Heflin died peacefully on January 8, 2023. Born Marilyn Carol Koerbel in Pittsburg, PA on December 24, 1930, Carol was the second child of Harry F. Koerbel and Violet L. Craig. She was preceded in death by her brother Don Allan Koerbel (1990), her sister-in-law Donna Smith Gatton (2022), her nephew Craig Allan Koerbel (2004), and former husband Joseph W. Heflin (2019).
Carol is survived by her daughter Vickie Heflin Long (Charles), son Roy Heflin, grandson Brice Long (Amy), great grandson Rowan Long, half-sister Rosalind Jean Jackson, niece Patricia Koerbel Adair (John), nephew Keith Koerbel, and great niece Keturah Adair. Carol loved her family with her whole heart and would have “fought a tiger” for them. She will stay in our hearts and will be missed forever.
After graduating from Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1951, she became a dedicated registered nurse. Early on she worked in the operating room and nursery and later as a Red Cross volunteer nurse, a Hospice nurse, and nurse for Vinson Hall in McLean, VA.
Carol lived in Fairfax City most of her life. She was a member of Fairfax United Methodist Church and Fairfax Women’s Club. She was a caretaker for Kitty Pozer at Earps Ordinary (now Radcliffe-Allison House). Her interests in the history of the City extended to her becoming a docent for the Historical Society. She was an avid gardener and bridge player. Her “happy garden” at her home in Cobdale was her pride and joy. She continued her gardening talents and bridge skills when she moved to The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester, VA in 2013. To those that knew her, she was a faithful fun friend and a kind generous neighbor.
