Maria Johanna (Penaska) Smith, 83 passed away on Thursday, February 23, 2023 at English Meadows in Stephens City, VA.

Maria was born in 1939 in Queens, NY the daughter of the late Charles Michael and Elsa Lina Erna Penaska. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Maryville, TN. Maria enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking and spending time with her family. She was also particularly fond of her German heritage, especially its cuisine. Maria was a secretary who worked for Banker’s Trust in Manhattan. She and her husband lived in Houlton, ME, then Burke, VA, and also resided in Maryville, TN before moving to Stephens City. Her favorite quote is “Cherish your yesterdays and dream your tomorrows, but most importantly, don’t forget to live your todays.”

Maria is survived by her husband, David Rackliffe Smith whom she married on December 11, 1965; sons, Brian Smith and wife Susan of Houston, TX, Kevin Smith and wife Michelle of Stephens City, VA; grandchildren, Nicholas Smith of Charlottesville, VA, Christopher Smith of Houston, TX and Tyler Smith and Ashley Smith both of Stephens City, VA.

She is preceded in death by a half-sister, Sandra Slimak.

The family will be holding a private graveside service for Maria.
