Major Joseph W. “Joe” Straub, USA (Ret.), 83, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2019, at Spring Arbor of Winchester.
Mr. Straub was born in 1935 in Paragould, Arkansas, the son of the late Joseph and Sue Straub. He was a decorated combat veteran of the United States Army, having served two tours in Vietnam. He advanced to the rank of Major and retired after 22 years of service. After his retirement from active duty, he worked for the Department of the Army for 21 years. Mr. Straub enjoyed watching movies, playing cards, and was a collector of stamps and coins. His greatest joy was spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joe was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, where he served as Eucharistic minister for many years and enjoyed teaching catechism to 8th grade boys in the past.
He married Mary Bond on May 28, 1972 in Paragould, Arkansas.
Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years and daughters, Katherine Crofoot (Howard) of Platteville, Wisconsin, Deborah Bradley of Millsboro, Delaware, Stephanie McMurry of Jackson, Tennessee; son, F. Scott Straub of Little Rock, Arkansas; grandchildren, Henry Crofoot (Rebecca) of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Andrew Rock of Millsboro, Delaware, Ryan Bradley of Lewes, Delaware, and Z. Jordan Rock of Millsboro, Delaware; great-grandchildren, Isabella and Beau; and sisters, Cathy Carter of Paragould, Arkansas, Martha Hey of Dayton, Ohio, Rosemary Brashers of Coco Raton, Florida.
Mr. Straub was preceded in death by a daughter, Machalle Taylor; a son, John J. Straub; and brothers, Thomas, David, and Virgil Straub.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 6 pm to 7 pm on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am on Wednesday at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Reverend Stephen Holmes officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.
