Lynne K. Rio passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018 at Winchester Medical Center. She was born in 1945, in Altoona, Pennsylvania, to Betty J. and Charles B. Fickes. Her family moved to Ocean City, New Jersey, where Lynne grew up. She graduated from Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1967. She met her future husband, Carmen A. Rio at Upsala, where they were students.
Lynne and Carmen were married on August 25, 1968, in Bayonne, New Jersey.
In 1969 Carmen enlisted in the United States Army. They moved to Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where their son Carleton was born in 1970. Her husband was sent to VietNam in 1970 and Lynne and her son moved to Altoona, Pennsylvania to live with her parents while her husband was away.
When Carmen returned, they moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where her husband was employed. Lynne’s career in the insurance industry began while living there.
Lynne and Carmen and their son moved to Southern Maryland due to a job change. In 1978, they moved to Winchester, Virginia, where Carmen joined Duncan Bros Tire Co. Lynne continued to work in the insurance industry through these job changes.
In 1984, Lynne started her own business, Lynne Rio Insurance Agency, Inc. She was one of very few female business owners in the area at the time. She was also one of the first females to earn the designation of “Certified Insurance Counselor” in this area.
Lynne is survived by her husband of 50 years, Carmen Rio, son, Carleton Rio, his wife, Sonja and daughters, Alexa, Sofia and Anneka. She is also survived by her brother, Charles, his wife, Karen and their children, Benjamin and Michelle; and her sister, Leslie Nichols and husband, Tom and daughters, Karen and Jennifer.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 5:00-7:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A prayer service will follow the visitation at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, at 10:00 AM, in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia.
