Louise L. Mathieu, 103, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, at
the Village at Orchard Ridge.

Born February 27, 1923, in New Orleans, Louisiana, she was the daughter of the late George Joseph Llopis and Antonia (Hall) Llopis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Owen Rudolph Mathieu Sr., whom she married December 8, 1943, in New Orleans. Louise was a graduate of Xavier University Preparatory School and Xavier University of New Orleans. She, her husband, and their first child moved to Washington D.C. in 1946, as Owen looked to begin a career after his service in World War II. She quickly made friends with whom she would be close for the rest of her life, and she found her life’s professional passion in teaching. She taught home economics as a junior high and high school teacher in the Washington, D.C. Public School System. She was known as an excellent teacher, greatly admired by her many students, and recognized by Seventeen Magazine as a “Homemaking Teacher of the Year” in 1960. She and her husband Owen moved from Montgomery County, Maryland to The Village at Orchard Ridge in Winchester, Virginia in 2017.

A woman of many talents and interests, Louise had a life-long appreciation of the arts and design. She studied the violin, playing in school orchestras from childhood through college. She also enjoyed watercolor painting. She had an exceptional sense of style expressed through interior and clothing design and floral arrangement, among other disciplines. She was also actively involved in numerous social and community organizations, including the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Women’s Committee of the Washington Performing Arts Society, the Links, Jack and Jill of America and others. She was a woman who fearlessly embraced many aspects of life and thrived in the company of others yet never lost humility despite her accomplishments. Friends of her children who met her only once never forgot her, never stopped asking about her well-being.

Louise is survived by her sons, Owen and his wife Eileen, of Marblehead, MA and Michael and his wife Catherine, of Winchester, VA; her grandchildren, Melanie (Greg) of Marblehead, MA; Eric (Christina) of Santa Barbara, CA; Irène (Justin) of Toronto, Canada; Maura of Denver, CO; Jeannette of San Francisco, CA.; and Benoît of Québec, Canada; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her brother, George J. Llopis Jr.

She will be deeply missed.
