Lieutenant Colonel John Michael “Jack” Hey, USMC (Ret.), 91, passed away peacefully at his residence in White Post, Virginia, on Sunday, June 28, 2026, surrounded by the comfort of his home and the love of his family.
Jack was born on September 14, 1934, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, a beloved son of the late John Andrew Hey and Rose (Scanlon) Hey. He grew up with a passion for leadership, working as a camp counselor and enjoying canoeing in his youth. Jack graduated from The Roxbury Latin School before attending Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and participated in the Navy ROTC program. He later advanced his education by obtaining a Master’s Degree from the U.S. Navy Post Graduate School.
A proud and distinguished veteran, Jack dedicated his career to the United States Marine Corps, serving honorably during the Vietnam War. Over his decorated military career, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and was awarded two Bronze Stars for his meritorious service and bravery. Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, Jack continued to exemplify the values of duty, honor, and devotion in every aspect of his life.
Jack was a devout man of faith and a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, as well as a dedicated brother in the Knights of Columbus. An active individual, he spent his free time golfing, hiking, playing handball, and reading deeply about history. Above all else, Jack was defined by his unwavering devotion to his family. He cherished every moment spent in their company, leaving behind a legacy of strength, warmth, and integrity.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 69 years, Marie Kathryn (Hain) Hey, whom he married on August 17, 1957, in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.
He is also survived by his three daughters: Susan E. Brown, Diane R. Grubb, and Julia M. Moss (and her husband, John); five cherished grandchildren; two precious great-grandchildren; and five nephews and one niece who held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, the late Sally Singh and his grandson, Andrew Grubb.
The family will receive friends for a visitation on Friday, July 10, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, Virginia.
A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am with Fr. Mark M. Mullaney officiating. Jack will be laid to rest with full military honors at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Cemetery.
