Lester L. Whitacre
Lester Lemuel “Jack” Whitacre, age 87, of Clear Brook, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2014, in Warren Memorial Hospital, Front Royal, Virginia.
Mr. Whitacre was born in 1927, in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of the late Jesse Robert and Edna Mary Whitacre. He was a truck driver for Grocers Wholesale, retiring in 1962, with 28 years of service. He also worked at Winchester Feed and Seed for many years, until it closed. Jack attended Heritage Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army, where he served as a Private during World War II.
Jack married Sandra Lee Merica in Winchester, Virginia, on April 3, 1970. She preceded him in death on July 30, 1996.
Jack is survived by his daughter, Margo D. Johnson and husband Timothy of Clear Brook, VA; his three sons, Lester V. “Jack” Whitacre and wife, Joyce of Winchester; Donald L. Whitacre and wife Diane of Griffin, GA and Douglas R. Whitacre and wife Patricia of Winchester, VA; seventeen grandchildren; twenty nine great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Braithwaite of Piedmont, WV.
Two sisters, Opal Larrick and Ida Roe and a brother, John Whitacre, preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his first wife, Margaret Virginia Ashley Kerns and a great-grandson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 6-8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 AM on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Pastor Gerald Walkowiak officiating. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Gore, VA.
