Leota Baker Carroll, 92, of Winchester, VA, passed away on Monday, January 29, 2024, peacefully at her home.

Leota was born in 1931 in Romney, WV, the daughter of the late Roy and Zella (Haines) Baker. She worked as a private caregiver at Westminster Canterbury and was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church and Galilee Christian Church.

She married Russell C. Carroll on May 5, 1961, in Sandston, VA. He preceded her in death in June of 1988.

Leota is survived by her children, Ronald Simkhovitch, Sr. (Velma) of Stephenson, VA, Judith Beckett of Stephenson, VA, William “Tony” Carroll (Regina) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Jody Shull (Erle), Ronald Simkhovitch, Jr. (Addie); great-grandchildren, Jeremy Beckett (Kristen), Michael Dolese, Dustin Simkhovitch (Hannah), Jenna Shull; great great-grandson, Lucas Beckett and sister, Patricia Baker Sonner (Calvin) of Strasburg, VA.

Along with her parents and husband, Leota is preceded in death by her grandchildren, Stacie Simkhovitch Dolese, William “Rusty” Carroll, II; sisters, Pleasant McKee, Mabel Carpenter, Rhoda Sirbaugh, brothers, Burl “Buck” Baker and Loring “Jimmy” Baker and son-in-law, Danny Beckett.

A visitation will be held for Leota on Monday, February 5, 2024, from 6pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, at 11am in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Ronnie, Judy, and Tony, We are so very sorry for the loss of your beloved Mom. She was quite a woman and we have fond memories of her. Our deepest sympathy.

I worked with Leotta at Westminster-Canterbury. She was such a hard worker. Even on days when it was snowing outside, Leotta always made it in. She had some health problems but that did not stop her. She was a fighter. It was a pleasure being your friend Leotta. I admired you very much.
