Leo F. Carlin, 85, of Winchester, Virginia, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009, in a local nursing facility.
Mr. Carlin was born in 1927, in Gardner, New York, the son of the late Edward A. and Mary Catherine Carlin. He lived in Peekskill, New York until 1942 then served in the United States Army, 327th Field Artillery, 7th Army from 1943-1946. Mr. Carlin served in France, Belgium and Germany from 1944-1945. He was a graduate of the University of NYC, Long Island, and American University, Washington D.C., receiving a Law Degree. He then graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia and served as an agent from 1949-1953. Mr. Carlin worked in the Legal and Bond Claim Department for National Surety in New York City from 1953-1957. From 1958-1968 he was employed as a Bond Claim Manager for Chubb and Son Insurance Company. In 1969 he became the Vice President and Bond Claim Manager for North Skandia American Reinsurance in New York City, serving until 1988. He and his wife Betty moved to Winchester, Virginia in 1988.
Mr. Carlin was a director of North American Reinsurance International Corporation, Pat Chairman of the Fidelity and Surety Section of the Federation of Insurance Corporation Council. He was also a member of the Surety Association of American and the Co-founder of the Surety Association of Westfield, Ohio. He was a member of the Association of Independent Sureties, and was listed in the Who’s Who insurance. He was also a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, Shenandoah Potomac Chapter. Mr. Carlin had an avid love of golf where he was a member of the Winchester Country Club, as well as member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester, Virginia.
His wife, Betty Thomas Carlin preceded him in death on November 10, 2002.
Surviving are his sons, Michael Carlin and his wife, Kathleen, of Augusta, West Virginia, Stephen Carlin and his wife, Lynn, of Livingston Manor, New York; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and his brother, Tony Carlin and his wife, Janet, of Leesburg, Florida.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Monday, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2:00-4:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, Virginia.
