Laverne Earl “Bill” Triggs, age 84, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Friday, December 15, 2017 at his residence.
Mr. Triggs was born in 1933 in Spirit Lake, Iowa, the son of the late Lawrence Earl and Mildred Irene Triggs. Bill enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1950 where he served in Korea during the war until being injured and medically discharged.
Bill met his sweetheart, Darlene, at Bethesda Naval Hospital while recovering from his wounds. They were married on August 8, 1956 in Rockville, Maryland.
Bill worked at the Army Corps of Engineers while attending classes at the University of Tulsa. After graduating with a degree in Engineering Physics in 1960 he moved to the DC area to work at the Naval Research Lab (NRL). After working at NRL for ten years and receiving the Superior Civilian Service Award, he went to work at the Pentagon where he was a Scientist supporting Naval Service Warfare. He received the Goodell Award in Physics shortly after retiring from federal service.
Bill was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and the Association of Old Crows. He enjoyed researching genealogy, teasing his grandchildren, his visits to France, cooking, talking military history with his grandson, and Sunday morning crossword puzzles. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and going on various outings with them. He celebrated their birthdays at the Red Fox Inn in Middleburg, and his favorite holiday was Thanksgiving. He enjoyed a good glass of wine and entertaining friends and family. Bill loved spoiling his wife and his cat.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Darlene “Dolly”; daughter, Kelli Ellis Hall (Mark) of Winchester, VA; sons, Raymond Earl Triggs (Andrea) of Mount Airy, MD, Robert Earl Triggs (Debbie) of Warrenton, VA, and William Earl Triggs (Christina) of Strasburg, VA; grandchildren, Jessica Marie Triggs, Kooper Ellis Hall, Matthew Robert Triggs, William Dean Triggs, Russell Earl Hall, and Christopher James Triggs.
In addition to Bill’s parents he is preceded in death by a son, Stephen Earl Triggs; a sister, Joanne Triggs; and his brothers, Gerald “Jerry” Triggs and Marvin Triggs.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, December 21, 2017 at 11am at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
Visitation/Viewing will start at 10am, one hour prior to the funeral service.
