Laura T. Vogt
Laura T. “Dee” Vogt, 91, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Westminster Canterbury in Winchester, Virginia.
Mrs. Vogt was born in 1922, in Howe Cave, New York, the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Terezina Turturo. Laura graduated from Cobleskill High School in 1938 at the age of 16. She continued her education at Mildred Elley Business School in Albany, New York where she received her Associate’s Degree. Laura was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II where she achieved the rank of Chief Yeoman. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Naval Congressional Liaison Office from 1943-1949. Prior to her service in the Navy, she worked for the Albany Times-Union from 1940 – 1943.
Mrs. Vogt was active in the American Legion Post 139 and the Lee Senior Center, both located in Arlington, Virginia. During her residency at Westminster-Canterbury in Winchester, she was the head of the Bridge Club where she was an avid Canasta and Bridge player. She also enjoyed playing bingo.
Her husband, John M. Vogt, whom she married in Washington, D.C. on April 6, 1946, preceded her in death on October 26, 2003. John Vogt was Editor and Chief of the Washington Bureau of United Press International for over 40 years. After John’s retirement, Laura and he enjoyed a long retirement that included international travel, spending time with children and grandchildren, and visiting with lifelong friends.
Laura is survived by her daughter, Susan Theresa Vogt and husband, Michael Baechler, of Portland, Oregon, her sons, Timothy J. Vogt and wife, Mary Jane, of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, and Gregory Scott Vogt and wife, Janis, of Torrance, California; and seven grandchildren. A brother, Nicola Turturo, preceded her in death.
Inurnment with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery will be at a later date.
