Laura Ashcraft Patton, 81, of Front Royal, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center with her son Travis by her side.
Born in 1944 in Richmond, Kentucky, Laura was the beloved daughter of the late Russell and Bessie Ashcraft. From an early age, she embodied curiosity, determination, and a deep appreciation for learning. She graduated from Model Laboratory High School and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Eastern Kentucky State College, beginning a lifelong commitment to education and service.
Laura devoted much of her professional life to teaching in schools across the country. After retiring from the classroom, Laura continued to give of herself, fundraising for charities in Virginia Beach and supporting causes close to her heart.
Her faith was a guiding force throughout her life. A former member of All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach and a current member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal, Laura found community, comfort, and purpose within her church families. Most recently, she volunteered at The Samuels Library in Warren County, where she was also an active member of the embroidery club, sharing laughter, creativity, and friendship.
Laura was deeply engaged in the world around her. She took an active interest in Virginia politics and believed strongly in civic responsibility. At home, she was an animal lover, an avid reader, and a talented knitter and baker. She delighted in traveling and especially enjoyed entertaining family and friends.
Above all, Laura was known for her independence, strength, and vibrant personality. She lived life on her own terms, with conviction, compassion, and grace.
Laura is survived by her son, Travis Patton of Washington, D.C., of whom she was immensely proud. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Tom Patton. Laura also is survived by Tom’s sister, Sarah Patton of Sinks Grove, West Virginia, who remained a very meaningful part of her extended family.
A service celebrating Laura’s life will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Calvary Episcopal Church in Front Royal. A reception will follow at the church. Laura will be inurned at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach at a later date.
