Larry Wilson Hackney, 69, of Woodstock, Virginia passed away after battling many health-related issues on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Hackney was born in 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of the late James C. and Mildred A. Hackney. Larry was of the Southern Baptist Faith. He found great joy in his later years building bird castles and was known as the “Bird Castle Man of Shenandoah”. Larry was gifted with his woodworking skills. He was an avid sports fan. Above all else his greatest passion was his family. Larry was a veteran of the United States Army having served 3 tours in Vietnam achieving the rank of SP5(T). During his tour of duty he was awarded the Purple Heart, Aircraft Crewman Badge, Air Medal with “V” Device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.
Larry married Gladys Jarrell Hackney on October 30, 2010 in New Market, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife Gladys, is his daughter, Jamie Lynn Hertz of Virginia Beach, Virginia and son, Nathan Cole Hackney of Williamsburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Noelle Baffour and Ava Seriani both of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sisters, Nancy Lee Horton of Purcellville, Virginia, Barbara Emmaline Winterable of Ellendale, Delaware, Lucille Redmond of Ashburn, Virginia, Carol Jean Hopkins of Jacksonville, Florida; brothers, Thomas and Ronald Hackney both of Paeonian Springs, Virginia; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Hackney was preceded in death by sisters, Marie Williams, Rachel Sharitz and brother, James William Hackney.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with a funeral service to follow at 1:00 pm with Pastor Mark Jordan officiating.
