Larry G. Correll, 69, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Monday, October 1, 2018, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury.
Mr. Correll was born in 1949 in Borger, Texas, the son of the late Claude Gilchrist and Lois and Lewis Correll. He was a graduate of Dawson County High School in Glendive, Montana; earned a Bachelor’s degree in Music from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota; a Master’s degree in Music from Southwest Texas State University and a Master’s degree in Church Music from Shenandoah University.
His lifetime love of music employed Mr. Correll as an educator of music in middle schools, high schools, and colleges in Texas, as well as Augusta County and Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia. He was an adjunct professor of music education at Southwest Texas State University and Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia. He was also an instructor/clinician for Shenandoah University’s Church Music Institute. Mr. Correll was a member of the Winchester Chapter of American Guild of Organists, former Chapter Dean and Co-Director of Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention, former Director of Clarke County Community Band, member of Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association and served as a representative for District XVI (Loudoun County Public Schools), a member of the National Association for Music Education, Virginia Music Educators Association, Association of Lutheran Church Musicians, and was an active marching and symphonic band adjudicator.
As a church organist Mr. Correll served St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Canyon Lake, Texas and St. Paul Lutheran Church in New Braunfels, Texas. In Virginia, his exceptional talent as an organist was shared at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Staunton, Bethany Lutheran Church and Westminster Presbyterian Church in Waynesboro, was organist and Director of Music at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester and most recently served as organist for ten years at First Baptist Church in Winchester.
Mr. Correll was a mentor to many students over the years that are now themselves; music educators, band directors, and church musicians.
He married Sue Ellen Christian on August 6, 1994 in Waynesboro, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of 24 years is a sister, Lexie Gilchrist of Smithfield, Texas; aunt, Jeannie Apel (Mel) of San Antonio, Texas; sister-in-law, Virginia Tierney of Waynesboro, Virginia; and beloved Dachshunds, Pepper and Dexter.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, October 13th, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Winchester with Pastor Kristin Adkins-Whitesides, Reverend Dr. David Young, The Very Reverend Webster Gibson, The Reverend Elizabeth Lewis, and The Reverend Larry Lawhon officiating. A reception will follow the service at First Baptist Church of Winchester.
