Larry Alton Mullin, 80 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Winchester Medical Center.

Larry was born in 1944 in Berkeley Springs, WV, the son of the late Alton and Ann Mullin. He received his bachelor’s degree from Shephard College and his master’s degree from James Madison University. He went on to pursue his doctorate degree from Virginia Tech. Larry was an educator/administrator for the Frederick County Public School System until his retirement. He was a member of the Winchester/Frederick County Historical Society. Larry enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing golf, and researching genealogy.

He married Elizabeth Gray Welton on January 11, 1963, in Williamsport, MD.

Larry is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughters, Rebecca Mullin (Craig Sheets) of Jacksonville, FL, Laura Sullivan (Jason) of Martinsburg, WV; sons, K. Scott Mullin (Cindy) of Clear Brook, VA, Michael Mullin (Fay) of Winchester, VA; grandchildren, Carly Zeigler, Ashley Oyler, Madison Sheets, Grayson Sheets, Kirsten Mullin, Nathan Mullin and Colleen Sullivan and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his sister, Carole Habash.

A visitation will be held for Larry on Thursday, June 12, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm with a service to be conducted on Friday, June 13, 2025, at 11am, all held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A private interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at 9am.

I am so sorry for your loss. I was always impressed with how supportive Larry was, Gray, while you were pursuing your degree. We shared many stories over the miles we car pooled to Madison College(JMU). May God hold you and your family in His highest hand. Libby Edwards

My condolences to the Mullin family and friends. I'm the cousin of Larry's daughter in law Fay Mullin. I will always remember, and be thankful for, Larry's sense of humor and his kindness. It was always a privilege, and joy, to sit and chat with him over the years. Thank you Larry! Rest in peace. I had Mr. Mullin for 2 years with different history classes. I enjoyed his presentation and fun games he taught us as we learned. He called me my sister’s name those years until graduation, when he called me by my name. He had purposely did that he said. My dad had worked for the school those years and those two joked around, too. I am truly sorry for the loss of this great man. I’m so proud to have known him.

Larry was one of my most memorable teachers.I got to be around he and Gray in the 90’s ( I was their cleaning lady for years), I always felt calm, peaceful, and at ease in their home, I think that speaks to its occupants. Larry impressed me as a very moral, loving family man . I’m so glad I crossed paths with the Mullins in this life. God bless him and all that loved him.

Deepest sympathy to Mr. Mullin's family. He was one of my favorites teachers. He was the best! His recounting of history brought it to life. He encouraged me to study history, to write, and to be my best. I will never forget him.

Mr. Mullins was a huge influence on me throughout Aylor and Wood and tried his best to advise and direct and mentor me to a have successful and happy life. He was the perfect person for the job and did it well. Often throughout my life I have paused and thought of him and what he instilled in me. He was no quitter and I am so sure he will be greatly missed by many others. I am grateful I had his attention for a while it improved me. Thanks for the future sir!

I had the opportunity, as a parent volunteer, to work closely with Mr. Mullen during Holly’s years at Aylor Middle School………with choral productions……heading up school-wide fundraisers……setting up the first security desk (with Deputy Mike Richardson, School Resource Officer) …… concessions…..and other events. I had a great deal of respect for Mr. Mullen. I felt he backed-up his teachers and genuinely cared about his students. It was a pleasure working with him.

Mr Mullin was a wonderful person. He was a great listener, even though I was a teenage girl, he was always there for me. To the family, I am truly sorry for your loss 😢

My sincere condolences to the family. Larry was an awesome administrator for the Aylor Staff. He was amazing. I have so many fun memories of him. Our staff was one big happy family because of him. Please know that you will continue to be in my prayers.

My deepest sympathy goes out to you all. I was shocked to hear of his passing. I had missed him at FCRT’s this past year but had no idea he was ill. Larry and I graduated from Shepherd College together and had numerous classes together while there. He was my administrator at Aylor during the 70’s and later at James Wood. He was a good man and a good friend. I know he will be missed by many whose lives he touched.

II am so sorry to learn of the passing of Larry Mullin. He hired me as a choral music teacher at Aylor Muddle School when I moved to Winchester, Va. I appreciated him both as a wonderful principal and friend. My prayers go out to his wife, Gray, and to his family for comfort at this very difficult time.
