Kenneth Roy Frye, age 79, passed away February 21, 2025, at the Winchester Medical Center. He was the son of the late Roy B. and Geneva S. Frye. He lived with his family on their farm in Hanging Rock, WV until they moved to Winchester when Kenny was twelve years old. He was a 1964 graduate of James Wood High School.
In his early career he was an automobile mechanic at Mike’s Service Center on Kent Street. From there he accepted a position with Valley Protein and remained there for over thirty years.
Kenny was an avid fisherman and a boat enthusiast. He loved being by the water, and summer weekends were usually spent on the Shenandoah River. His winters were spent in his cluttered garage rebuilding a motor or restoring a car. If it had a motor, Kenny could fix it.
Kenny loved animals, and he had a deep respect for nature. He enjoyed gardening and always looked forward to the tomatoes and cucumbers he had grown himself. Kenny was always “just a country boy” at heart.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sharon “Sherri” Frye; his daughter and son-in-law Rebekah and David McKendry and their children Marnie and Strummer of Burbank, CA; his sister Betty Lathem of Elgin, TX; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is also survived by his beloved cat, Rosie.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, on Friday, June 13, 2025. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM and will be followed by a memorial service at 7:00 PM with Pastor Alan Morrison officiating. Per Kenny’s request, his body was cremated, and his ashes will be privately inurned at Fairview Cemetery next to his parents.
Kenny hated wearing a coat and tie more than anything in the world. His normal attire was worn out blue jeans and a flannel shirt. To honor Kenny’s memory the family requests casual dress at his service.
A special thanks to Emily Headley, Steve Frye, and Beverley Ridings as well as to neighbors Alice and Buddy Robertson.
