It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Kathleen “Kathy” Nerangis (Butler), 80 of Winchester, VA, on November 15, 2024. She was an incredible wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother who offered support, wisdom, guidance, and unconditional love in abundance. A friend to all she met, Kathy was a cherished pillar of the community leaving behind a legacy of kindness, joy, generosity, and strength.
Kathy was born on April 18, l944 in Fayetteville, (Ft. Bragg), North Carolina, the daughter of Dorothy Butler Andrews (Goldby) and Charles Thomas Butler, Jr. She graduated from Walter Johnson High School in Rockville, Maryland in 1962 and attended the University of Maryland. Because her father was in the Foreign Service of the U.S. State Department, her family traveled extensively. Kathy started school in Wiesbaden, Germany in the 1950’s. The family lived in the town of Hofheim, Germany in 1949 and were the only Americans in a radius of 48 towns. Until starting high school, Kathy’s family lived not only in Germany, but also Naples, Italy and Copenhagen, Denmark.
Kathy met the love of her life, Nicholas (Nick) James Nerangis at the United States Naval Academy when he was a midshipman. Kathy and Nick married on November 28, 1963 in a military wedding at All Saint’s Episcopal Church, Chevy Chase, Maryland.
As Co-Founder of Nerangis Management Corporation, Kathy devoted her professional life to creating and enhancing initiatives for the community she loved. Among countless impactful achievements, she served as the first woman on the Winchester Medical Center Board of Directors, founded First Night Winchester, founded the Ronald McDonald House in Richmond, Virginia, was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church and most recently served as a William and Henry Evans Children’s Home Board Member.
She is survived by her loving husband and adult children and their spouses, Lisa (Robert) Limoges, Nick (Shelly) Nerangis, Jr. and Steve (Vickey) Nerangis and seven devoted grandchildren, Alex, Katie, Chris, Emilie, Julia, Logan, and Bert. She is also survived by her cherished brother, Charles (Robyn) T. Butler, III, brother-in-law, Spirdon (Donna) Nerangis, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
A visitation for Kathy is planned on Monday, November 25, 2024, from 4pm to 7pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A Celebration of Life service will take place on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 11 am at Christ Episcopal Church officiated by Rev. Webster Gibson. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, Ronald McDonald House Charities, William and Henry Evans Children’s Home, Valley Health Foundation, Laurel Ridge Community College.
