Joseph W. Baker
Joseph W. Baker, 85, of Winchester, Virginia, died Sunday, July 1, 2013, in Blue Ridge Hospice Residential Center.
Mr. Baker was born in 1927, in Frederick County, Virginia, the son of the late Charles A. and Laura F. Baker. He was a Veteran having served in the United States Army during World War II achieving the rank of Tech 5. Mr. Baker was stationed in occupied Japan. He received the Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal. Mr. Baker was a carpenter for Senator John Warner at Stonebridge Farms in White Post, Virginia, and Atoka Farms in Middleburg, Virginia, serving for 25 years.
He married Grace E. Braithwaite on July 19, 1948, in Berryville, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife are his children, Charles S. “Steve” Baker and wife, Nancy of Martinsburg, West Virginia, Joyce A. Jackson and husband, David of Berryville, Virginia, Joseph W. ”Billy” Baker of Bunker Hill, West Virginia, Ronald A. Baker and wife, Wilma of Bluff City, Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Brian Jackson, Wayne Baker, Jeff Jackson, Nicole Wilt, Travis Baker, Bradley Baker and Christopher Baker; seven great grandchildren; siblings, Jacob, Daniel and Eddie Baker, Mary White, Anna Clevenger, Catherine Garrison, Martha Giles, Rebecca Groves and Sarah Jones. Three brothers, Frank, David and Samuel Baker preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, at Mount Hebron Cemetery with Pastor Ben Jenkins officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by VFW Post 2123.
Pallbearers will be Brian Crim, Stan Whitacre, Mike Armstrong, Brian Armstrong, Bryan Conrad and Lenny Millholland.
