John Virgil Weirick, 88, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Thursday, September 14, 2017 in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Mr. Weirick was born in 1929 in Lincoln, Minnesota, the son of the late Virgil and Anna Rose Weirick. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during the Korean Conflict and tours in the Panama Canal Zone, Taiwan, and Italy. He met his future wife, the former Marilyn M. Matthews, in Rome, Italy. They were married in New York on August 12, 1961. She preceded him in death in 2011.
Mr. Weirick retired from the Department of State Foreign Service in 1984. Serving 17 years overseas, his favorite posting was to Vienna, Austria.
Following retirement, Mr. Weirick moved to Gore, Virginia, where he was a member of NARFE (National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association); he enjoyed gardening and cooking, especially for the holidays; and had a passion for genealogy. Mr. Weirick was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church.
Surviving are daughters, Leslie Ann Johnson (Randall) and Kelly Weirick (Scott); grandchildren, Bradford and Matthew Johnson. Mr. Weirick was preceded in death by his older brothers, Wilbur Weirick (1978) and Ray C. Weirick (1995), and his older sisters, Esther F. Dixon (1992) and Rose M. Morrill (1999).
All services will be private. Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, is handling the arrangements.
