I worked with Joe in the magistrates office for about 5 years and had the pleasure of seeing him regularly when he would work in the Winchester office. When he would come to relieve me, he was always VERY early, which was always appreciated, but I would stay for a few minutes each time and chat with him. I remember one time in particular it had been heavily snowing and he came in several hours early, I believe he had stayed in a Winchester hotel the night before so he wouldn't have to worry about traveling, and he told me he might as well come to work instead of sit in a hotel room and insisted I go home and enjoy the snow. I remember thinking how generous and kind that was of him. I enjoyed the time I spent with him and was so sorry to hear of his passing.

I haven’t seen Joe in several years, kept meaning to drive up to Winchester. I always knew Joe was a very special guy. I have several vivid memories of him. It was the late 1990s, I was having dinner with Joe, Jeff, and some other high school friends at the restaurant at the old train station in Staunton. When the steaks arrived, Joe looked at them, cut his open, and asked for the manager. The menu said the restaurant served prime steaks, but Joe realized we were getting the low end of choice, if not select steaks. Who knew Joe was an expert in meat grades and preparation? I certainly didn’t. Joe became my go to reference for the quality of restaurant steaks. I learned a lot from him. Joe will live on in my memories, especially at cookouts.

I am caught without words over Joe's passing. Went to AMA with Joe and Jeff. Thought a LOT of both but Joe roomed next to me. We got back in contact a few years ago thanks to the Internet. I was so happy to hear how well his life had been and he was taking on a New Career in starting Nursing School. Joe had that little extra that many of us lack. I will miss my AMA Brother and old friend. I am praying for his Soul and for his Family he loved and spoke of often. May God watch over all of them.
