John will forever be a very special part of our family. His kindness and strength have left a lasting impact on me. He brought so much joy to our lives and I am grateful for the happiness and love between him and my mom over the past 17 years. We have shared so many wonderful moments together. A few especially memorable ones were four wheeling at the farm, his trip visiting me in Jacksonville, going to the Bahamas, jet skiing, going to church together, countless family dinners and celebrations, fun at JMU, and taking our silly family pictures every spring. John was always the one to take a chance and hope luck would be on his side. At Charles Town this meant hoping for a big win, but in his life he took a very significant chance when he participated in a clinical trial for immunotherapy. He was considered a super responder in the trial and in my eyes he was not only that but a true super hero to those fighting cancer. I’ll never forget when he spoke at a special event at the Moose about his experience, where he spent every Thursday with my mom and their close friends. It was inspiring to hear him tell his story. His bravery and strength has now impacted so many others fighting this battle. Although he was the one always hoping for a lucky day, we were truly the lucky ones to have him in our lives. We will always love and miss you John and you are forever in our hearts. Love, Amanda

Ryan Rutherford left a message on May 25, 2021:
John was such a loving step father to me. He did so much for me that I will never be able to forget. I truly appreciated every moment with him down to every last slot machine spin at Charlestown. He helped me become the man I am today by showing me how to treat a woman, the way he treated my mother. This has been a long, hard journey for all of us and thankfully he can rest peacefully now.
