.John W. “Jack” Duvall

John Wesley “Jack” Duvall, age 84, of Winchester, VA, died Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at his home after a hard fought battle with cancer. Mr. Duvall was born May 28, 1928 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late Roy Perrin and Mamie Duvall. Upon graduating from Eastern Kentucky University with Master’s Degree in Industrial Arts, Jack taught Industrial Arts at James Wood High School before returning to his alma mater, Handley High School, to teach Industrial Arts and Mechanical Drawing. He retired in 1986 as Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Winchester City Public Schools, having served a balanced tenure of teacher and administrator. Jack is a member of Handley High School’s Hunter Maddex Hall of Fame. An annual endowed award through the Winchester Education Foundation is named in honor of both Jack Duvall and his surviving wife, Polly. As a senior class sponsor, Mr. Duvall had the 1967 Handlian dedicated to him. Jack was also a proud veteran, having served as Lieutenant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Beyond Jack’s professional achievements, were his consummate devotion, dedication, and leadership to an expanding and vibrant Burnt Factory United Methodist Church.

He was an avid golfer, bowler and woodworker. His woodshop often served as his personal sanctuary. Jack enjoyed volunteering at Winchester Medical Center. He was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, Masonic Lodge, and Apple Valley Woodturners.

He married his soulmate, Mary Alice “Polly” Barbour on August 19, 1956, in Maysville, KY.

Surviving with his wife are sons, Mark Wesley Duvall and wife, Elizabeth of Ashburn, VA and Gregory Perrin Duvall and wife, Donna of Virginia Beach, VA; grandchildren, Shane Wesley Duvall, Perrin Elizabeth Duvall, and Morgan Anne Duvall, and a sister, Betty Duvall Livengood of Berryville, VA. He was preceded in death by 9 brothers and 5 sisters; Reginald, Charles Weedon, Donald, Richard, Ferman, Charles Raymond, Braxton, Louis, Robert, Frances, Dorothy, Margaret, “Dougie”, and Jean.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, November 25, from 6:00 until 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, Winchester, VA. A funeral service will be conducted on Monday, November 26 at 11:00 AM, also at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Steve Melester and Reverend Jay Hanke officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Keith Roberts, Joe Hulver, Sonny Sibert, Paul Gerometta, Jack Booth, Eddie Cooper, Jay Kackley, and David Winter. Honorary Pallbearers include Lester McKee, notable members of the Burnt Factory United Methodist Men; Rob Moss, Buddy Willis, Chuck Thomas, Scott Snyder, as well as the remaining membership of the Methodist Men.
