John was a wonderful professor. He influenced me as a writer and a young person. He will be deeply missed.
Laura Haubrick left a message on April 15, 2026:
John was a wonderful colleague. He was blunt, but honest and kind. I still remember him teasing that the albino frogs in my office tank "looked like raw chicken" (and he was not wrong.) Prayers for his wife Joanne, whom I also enjoyed working with at SU, and their family.
Nina and Ben Parker left a message on April 14, 2026:
Sincere condolences and prayers are sent to Joanne and family at this time of deep sorrow. Ben and I have wonderful memories of the times past when we joined together at the Christmas dinner. Love always
Steve Shively left a message on April 14, 2026:
I always enjoyed seeing John at Willa Cather events. He was dependably friendly, kind, and wise in all my encounters. John enriched the community of Cather scholars, teachers, and students. He will be missed. Steve Shively
Jo left a message on April 13, 2026:
John started out as my toughest professor, who then became my mentor, who then became my friend. I will miss him terribly, but hopefully I soaked in enough of his knowledge that a little piece of him survived. And if all his students have a little piece, then he truly lives on in our hearts.
Peace of mind is a call away. We're here when you need us most.
Rebecca Maynard left a message on April 2, 2026:
I was privileged to have several classes with Dr. Jacobs at Shenandoah University, and I particularly enjoyed The 1960s and The Works of Willa Cather. He was knowledgeable and dedicated, and also a genuinely nice person. My thoughts and sympathy are with the Jacobs family.
