On April 17, 2013, John R. Stanton of Stephens City passed away suddenly in Winchester, Virginia while at the Willows.
Mr. Stanton was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1923 to Thomas Stanton and Ellen Davis Stanton, both from the U.K. He grew up in Newington, Connecticut and graduated from Newington High School in 1941. Mr. Stanton was also a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in World War II. Upon returning from the war, he went on to graduate from the University of Tulsa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Mr. Stanton loved to fly, sail and ski and spent many years traveling before settling down and marrying his wife, Ilse Louise Hoffmann in 1959. They settled in Weston, Connecticut where they had two sons, Jeffrey and Stuart, and two German Shepherds, as John was fond of animals. John was beloved by all, and will be sorely missed by the community.
John is survived by his spouse, Ilse, two sons Jeffrey and Stuart, and two grandchildren, Brittany and Matthew. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, April 20 at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, 1260 Front Royal Pike (Rt. 522 South), in Winchester with Chaplain Vernon Bray officiating. Interment will follow the services at the Macedonia Cemetery.
The family invites all of John’s friends to celebrate his life, and requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org the ASPCA www.ASPCA.org or the local Frederick County SPCA.
