John Martin Cornwell, 88 of Stephens City, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at his home.
John was born in 1935 in Hanover, PA the son of the late John and Anna Cornwell. He was an alumnus of Randolph Macon Academy in Front Royal and he attended Bucknell University where he was on the football team. John served our country in the United States Army rising to the rank of SSGT E-7 and was a recipient of the Berlin Service Ribbon in 1961 and 1962. He retired after 43 years from Hecht’s Department Store (Currently Macy’s) as Divisional Vice President of Store Planning. John enjoyed fly fishing and spending time at the family cabin, “Rock Run”, near Ralston, PA. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan and a huge history buff, especially WWII. John attended Opequon Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Theresa Cornwell whom he married on February 5, 2000; daughters, Christie Cornwell, Katherine McHargue; stepdaughters, Carey Hofle and Kelly Wilkinson; grandchild, Hayden Wilkinson and his brother, Dan Cornwell and wife, Pat.
A memorial service will be held for John on Monday, October 14, 2024, at 4pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Pastor David Witt will officiate.
