John M. Benson
John Marshall Benson, 67, of Winchester, Virginia, died Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at his home.
Mr. Benson was born in 1946 Rockbridge County, Virginia, the son of the late Robert and Lula Mae Benson. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany and attaining the rank of SP4 (Specialist Fourth Class). Prior to his retirement, he was a farmer at Lazy Lane Farms in Upperville, VA. He was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church in Waynesboro, VA. He was a diehard Redskins fan, and he enjoyed bluegrass music, cattle farming, John Deere tractors and Judge Judy.
Mr. Benson married Dollye Shoemaker Benson on October 28, 1974 in Winchester, VA.
Surviving with his wife is a son, Wallace Stotlemyer, III and wife, Amy, of Winchester, VA; three daughters, Denise Stotlemyer of Moorefield, WV, Kathy Meade and husband, Todd, of The Plains, VA and Jennifer Helmick and husband, John, of Winchester; six grandchildren, Ashley Stotlemyer of Petersburg, WV, Zachery Meade of Nashville, TN, Darrion Helmick, Andrew Stotlemyer and Abigale Helmick, all of Winchester, and Madison Cruz of Moorefield, WV; a great grandson, Bryson Stotlemyer of Petersburg, WV; a sister, Mary Barnhardt of Toms Brook, VA, and two brothers, Clyde Benson of Middletown, VA and James Benson of Winchester.
He was preceded in death by a son, Stacy Stotlemyer; two sisters, Martha Betson and JoAnn Donivan, and a brother, Howard Benson.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Reverend Teresa Sharp officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by VFW Post 2123. Entombment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dr. Troy Mohler, Jimmy Pruitt, Kenny Ahern, Darrion Helmick, Todd Meade and Zachery Meade.
