Colonel John L. Hope (Ret.), known by his call sign “Shadow,” passed away peacefully at home on March 16, 2025, at the age of 84. A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, he dedicated his life to service, flying B-52s during the Vietnam War and leaving a lasting impact on those who served alongside him.
John was more than a decorated officer—he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who cherished his family above all else. With a sharp wit and a heart full of mischief, he was a jokester until the very end, bringing laughter and joy to those around him. His stories, humor, and unwavering love will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
An animal lover through and through, John had a special place in his heart for all creatures, big and small. Whether it was a stray in need or a lifelong companion, he welcomed them with kindness and care.
He leaves behind his beloved wife, Carolyn; his five children—Kenneth, Robert, Kimberly, Laurie, and Darlene; his siblings, Kenneth, Alan, Linda, and Andrea; and his many grandchildren, including Melinda and Dylan, who not only shared a home with him but lovingly cared for him in his final years. He also leaves behind numerous great-grandchildren, including Tyler and Kevin, Melinda’s children, who also resided with him and brought him endless joy.
While his passing leaves a deep void, his loved ones take comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain. He is now reunited with those who passed before him, soaring high, surrounded by his beloved animals, and finally free from earthly burdens.
Fly high, Shadow. Your mission here is complete.
