John L. Stutz was born July 17, 1938, in Washington, DC, to Laurence and Margaret Stutz, and died on December 29, 2018, from a heart attack. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and Montgomery County Technical College, and attended a business course at Princeton University. He was certified as a Professional Engineer and worked in the family mechanical contracting business, George FA Stutz Co., Inc., and as a project manager for Bechtel, Grunley Construction, and John J. Kirlin Companies. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, Mr. Stutz volunteered as the comptrollers of Grace Lutheran Church, where he also sang in the choir, and Prospect Hill Cemetery in Washington, DC.
In recent years, Mr. Stutz maintained his mechanical systems certification with the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland, and was associated with John C. Flood Co. He lived outside Lovettsville, VA, with his companion Tresa Titus, and studied and played mandolin as part of a life-long interest in Blue Grass music. Known as the man who could fix anything, he continued building, remodeling and repairing houses and their mechanical systems for his family and good friends.
He is survived by: two daughters, Elizabeth Stutz and Laura “Lolly” Snow, both of Waterford, VA; two grandchildren, Samantha Stiller (Tyler) of Lovettsville, VA, and Robert Snow of Harper’s Ferry, WV; and one great-grandson, Liam Stiller, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was formerly married to and remained good friends with Pamela Taggart of Someday Farm, Waterford.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.
