John Alan “Big John” Light, Sr., 86, of Frederick County, VA, passed away Thursday, June 26, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
John was born in 1938 in Frederick County, VA, son of the late John and Irene Light. He worked in the Frederick County Public School System as a custodian at Apple Pie Ridge Elementary. John was also a past employee of 30 years at Winchester Seed and Feed. He attended Chestnut Grove United Methodist Church. John was an avid hunter, a member of Winchester Gun Club and a life member of the ATA (American Trapshooting Association). He also enjoyed horseback riding, trail riding, and watching sports. Above all else, John was a hard-working man who loved the Lord and his family.
John married Martha Campbell in 1958 in Hagerstown, MD.
Surviving with his wife of 67 years is a son, John A. Light, Jr.; grandchildren, Sarah Irene Stiltner (John) of Texas and John Isaac Light (Shana) of Florida; great grandchild, Alexia Rose Light of Florida; sister, Phyliss Light of Winchester, VA; brothers, Larry Light, Donnie Light (Barbara), and Ronnie Light (Tammy) all of Winchester, VA; numerous nieces and nephews; and his loving canine companion, Squirt.
John was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, John Andrew Light.
A visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 pm on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Alan Morrison officiating. Interment will be in Chestnut Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Donald Light, Ronald Light, Larry Light, Corey Light, Adam Mullins, and John I. Light. Honorary pallbearer will be Walter DeHaven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to Blue Ridge Care, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, VA 22601.
