Joe Carl Lohr, 90, of Carolina Shores, North Carolina, died Sunday, February 28, 2016, at Grand Strand Hospital in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Mr. Lohr was born in 1925, in Wheeling, West Virginia, the son of the late Mabel G. (Lohr) Riedel. Joe graduated from Wheeling High School in May of 1944 where he participated with the varsity football and track teams. Joe later served in the Army during World War II serving with the 99th Infantry Division, First Army. He served in France, Belgium, and Germany and was awarded many various Army service awards including The Bronze Star.
Mr. Lohr he then graduated from Marietta College in Ohio with a B.S. in Business Administration where he was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He later attended Newark College of Engineering, Upsala College and ultimately received a Master’s Degree from Stevens Institute of Technology.
He was employed as a production supervisor industrial engineer and quality insurance engineer for various companies until his retirement from Comsat in 1994. Joe spent many years dedicated to many civic organizations including years with the Boys Scouts of America, Shawnee Ruritan Club as well as Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Lohr was also a member of the Frist Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA as well as Carolina Shores, NC.
Joe was married to Nancy June Bender on December 2, 1950. Nancy died on April 24, 1983. He later married Brenda Coffman on April 30, 1984, in Winchester, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife are his daughters, Susan E. Lohr and her husband Floyd Whorton and Rebecca L. Jenkins both of Stephens City, Virginia; sons, Matthew J. Lohr of Williamsburg, Virginia, Pete Woods and his wife, Sharon, of Woodbridge, Virginia; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren with two on the way; and two brothers, Ronald Riedel of Wheeling, West Virginia and Craig Riedel of Parkersburg, West Virginia.
His daughter, Tammy Coffman and sister, Evelyn Riedel, preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 2:00-4:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Shelia Brown officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia. Military Honors will be afforded by V.F.W. Post 2123. The Family will honor Joe with a memorial service at a later date in North Carolina.
Joes family wishes to offer there most sincere thank you to all there family and friends for the unconditional love and support throughout this time. He was a loving husband, Father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to many. He can be remembered for his love of gardening, fishing, woodworking and bowling. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
